Get Ready 2 Quit: Texting for Smoking Cessation
Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. Text messaging may offer a more effective and acceptable method to deliver cessation counseling with real-time, tailored therapy, than face-to-face and telephone counseling programs, which are often plagued by low utilization rates.
This text messaging program offers support to build self-efficacy among smokers who are not ready to quit and cognitive-behavioral content with specific advice for those ready to quit. One tool used is the Practice Quit Attempt intervention to increase smokers' motivation, confidence and coping skills, as well as knowledge about cessation, to induce a serious quit attempt. The study was funded in part by Partners Community Health Inc., in collaboration with the Massachusetts General Hospital Tobacco Research and Treatment Center.
