Leveraging technology that is already in many patients’ hands – the mobile phone – provides an opportunity to create and implement programs that deliver self-management tools and strategies across a broad spectrum of care.
Both SMS-based and mobile app-based programs allow for the personalization of information and support, outbound feedback and “touch,” creating an environment encouraging health engagement and more positive behaviors.
In collaboration with clinician experts in Partners HealthCare-affiliated hospitals, SMS-based campaigns that have been developed include:
- Appointment reminders to reduce no-shows at an MGH primary care office
- Personalized messaging, reminders and education from OB providers to improve pre-natal health in underserved communities
- Targeted messaging, reminders and encouragement from care providers to support patients recovering from opioid addiction
- Ongoing messaging, reminders and encouragement to support smoking cessation
